China’s new Pinglu Canal entered service as the country’s first river-to-sea canal on Wednesday. Built to handle ships of up to 5,000 tonnes, the infrastructure will shorten the transit distance from southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the sea by 560km (348 miles), bypassing ports in Guangdong province. By linking an expansive system of rivers and tributaries directly to the Gulf of Tonkin, the waterway provides landlocked areas across southern and southwestern China – such as Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces – with faster routes to Asean markets and international sea lanes.

In recent years, Loudoun County in the US state of Virginia has become known as the data centre capital of the world. The community of Sterling has even earned the name “data centre alley”, after around 250 data centres were built in the area only slightly larger than Hong Kong and plans were made for more than 100 more. About 75 per cent of Americans now oppose having data centres built near them, up from 42 per cent just a year ago, according to a poll published by Heatmap News. Residents have complained about noise and pollution caused by the booming AI industry. However, US politicians including President Donald Trump, as well as tech industry advocates, say Chinese influence campaigns are amplifying grassroots opposition – a claim locals who live near the centres deny.

Calls by US tech leaders for a voluntary slowdown in artificial intelligence development have prompted a sharp pushback from China. Researchers and state media have questioned whether the proposal is a genuine push for industry responsibility or an effort to entrench America’s technological lead. The response comes as major AI developers disclose cases of their AI agents breaking out of secure testing environments.

Chinese scientists have discovered unusually rich gold and silver deposits deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. The precious metals were found inside massive sulfide formations around an active hydrothermal field. Some samples reportedly contained concentrations exceeding those found in certain deposits on land. Researchers believe the region could hold significant economic and mining value. But the discovery also brings renewed attention to the controversial future of deep sea mining.

Mainland Chinese food and beverage chains have aggressively expanded into Hong Kong in recent years, but some are now hitting major roadblocks. Global beverage and dessert chain Mixue downsized its business in Hong Kong, while other brands like Fufuland and Ningji exited the Hong Kong market. Hong Kong’s relatively high rent and labour costs have been a challenge for many of the businesses, which normally rely on a high-volume, low-price business model common in mainland China.
