U.S. Forces Raid Ship, Seize Cargo Headed to Iran From ChinaOff the coast of Venezuela, US forces have seized an oil tanker suspected of smuggling oil to China in violation of international sanctions. The seizure highlighted the links between Venezuela and not just China, but the Indo-Pacific region. As an energy-rich socialist dictatorship, Venezuela is key political partner of Beijing and Moscow in Latin America, as well as a major recipient of Chinese aid, investment and weapons. The US raid come as the Trump Administration moves to reassert American hegemony over the region. How important is Venezuela to China? Is Trump attempting to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine? And what does the new “China Policy Paper on Latin America and the Caribbean” tell us about Beijing’s plans for the region? In this episode, we discuss Venezuela’s Indo-Pacific ties, Trump and Xi’s policies toward Latin America, and what it means for the Taiwan Strait and beyond.

Forbidden Homecomings: CCP’s War on Rural Returns to Avert a Peasant Uprising | Digging into ChinaChina’s streets feel eerily empty outside megacities—subways have seats, malls echo, and crowds have vanished. Where’s the 1.4 billion gone? High unemployment and economic woes are key culprits, slashing jobs and spending: box offices tanked 50%+ in 2025 holidays, while new resident loans plunged to a record -360 billion, signaling fear-driven debt payoffs over consumption.Pandemic losses and emigration play minor roles. The real driver? Migrant workers’ mass exodus home—fridges in tow, three months early—fleeing urban despair for rural limbo. Beijing’s flipping scripts: from 2020’s “return and build” push to 2023’s crackdown on “scale returns,” fearing idle youth breeding unrest like historical drifters. This risks fiscal black holes, wasted infrastructure, and simmering rural revolts—China’s ticking time bomb.

🔵 Sign up for the American Thought Leaders ALERTS newsletter to stay up-to-date on new episodes, releases, and special events 👉 https://ept.ms/ATLnewsletterHow might a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan unfold? China’s anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) strategy—a combination of missiles, submarines, sensors, and air defenses—is designed specifically to block and disrupt US air, sea, and even space and cyber power. But the true outcome of the operation will hinge on the rapid mobilization of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) ground forces, argues recently retired four-star general Charles Flynn, former commander of U.S. Army Pacific. He warns that the real “center of gravity” of a Chinese invasion will lie in its ability to rapidly assemble, deploy, and transport land forces across the Taiwan Strait.“What keeps me up at night is their ability to actually pull that off in 96 hours,” Flynn says.He is convinced that building a “strategic land power network” and forging deep, enduring ties with partner armies in Asia will be vital to deterring the Chinese regime. In this episode, Flynn lays out a roadmap for how the U.S. military should rethink its strategy, technology, and partnerships to deter Beijing and safeguard its allies in the Indo-Pacific.“This century is going to be defined by the relationship between the United States and China. … We’ve said we’ve pivoted to the Pacific for more than a decade, and in actual behavior and actions, that’s not accurate,” Flynn says. Before commanding U.S. Army Pacific, Flynn served as the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Training (G3/5/7). He is the brother of General Michael Flynn, former national security advisor to President Donald Tru

France’s Emmanuel Macron has completed a state visit to China, his fourth as president. At the top of his agenda: the economy and the Russia-Ukraine War. In contrast to Xi Jinping’s one-hour talk in South Korea with US President Donald Trump, the Xi-Macron meeting in Beijing and trip together to Sichuan Province — including a visit to see the pandas — certainly appeared more friendly. What is behind Xi’s charm offensive? And what did Macron accomplish? Meanwhile, the German foreign minister also made a recent trip to Beijing, saying “Freedom, security and prosperity in Germany and Europe are closely linked to China.” In this episode, we discuss EU-China relations, the foreign policies of France and Germany, and what these developments potentially means for peace and security in Europe and the Taiwan Strait.

In a nutshell, China’s latest big push to rev up spending? It’s a head-scratcher. Six top government outfits just dropped a blueprint to flood the market with more stuff—trillions in green gadgets, health fads, and kid toys—by cranking up factories with AI magic. Sounds swell, right? Except economists here are high-fiving like it’s genius, blind to the real glitch: we’ve got too much junk piling up, not enough wallets to buy it.Flash back: Crises hit when machines outpace paychecks, sparking everything from colonies to world wars. America kept the peace by snapping up our exports—until their debt mountain said “enough.” Now, with trade walls rising, Beijing’s fix? Make even more. It’s like curing a hangover by chugging another round, rooted in 5,000 years of famine fears. Folks, this scarcity ghost is about to haunt us all over again. Wake-up call? Overdue.

In this episode of DC Insiders by TaiwanPlus, Host Wenchi Yu speaks with Erin Murphy of CSIS about how undersea fiber‑optic cables—carrying over 95 percent of global internet and data traffic—have become critical infrastructure at the center of economic growth, AI, cloud computing, and telehealth worldwide, including in Taiwan’s high-tech, export‑driven economy. Against the backdrop of rising U.S.-China competition, the conversation explores how Taiwan’s dense cable links and strategic location make it both a digital hub and a potential vulnerability, as subsea systems face threats ranging from espionage and sabotage to gray‑zone coercion. Murphy discusses recent incidents and emerging risks, then outlines what governments, companies, and international partners can do to harden infrastructure, improve redundancy, and build cooperative frameworks to secure these “invisible lifelines” that underpin modern life from the Indo‑Pacific to the Atlantic.#TaiwanPlus #TaiwanPlusNews #TaiwanNews-

The recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy has ruffled liberal and even some conservative feathers both here and abroad, for two reasons: No. 1, the Trump administration told Europe an inconvenient truth: The birthplace of Western civilization is facing “civilization erasure.” And No. 2, critics feel that the strategy is not critical enough of Russia and China. They’re wrong. An entire section, “Economic Security,” is a not-so-subtle nod to America’s ongoing, great power competition with China, evident in these carefully selected priorities: “balanced trade,” ”securing access to critical supply chains and materials,” “reindustrialization,” “reviving our defense industrial base,” etc.The other controversy is: Why does the strategy call for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and not just openly condemn Vladimir Putin instead? Because the assessment is grounded in reality. Unless the Europeans want to spend more than the already mandated 5% of GDP on defense budgets and pour more sophisticated weapons systems into Ukraine, then the conflict has no clear end in sight: “Do you wanna have an ongoing bleeding Stalingrad or Verdun … right on the borders of Europe,” asks Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”

Reports that China’s Air Force commander, General Chang Dingqiu, died suddenly while in detention have sent shockwaves through the Chinese military. At the same time, the long-silenced strategist Liu Yazhou has re-emerged in public discussion, raising uncomfortable questions about war planning, loyalty, and morale inside the PLA. This program examines Chang’s rise and death, Liu Yazhou’s warnings about a Taiwan war, and the growing unrest among officers and veterans. When generals disappear and veterans are suppressed, what does it reveal about the true state of China’s armed forces?

Two nuclear-capable Russian Tu-95 bombers conducted a joint patrol with Chinese J-15 fighters and H-6 bombers through Japan and South Korea’s air-defense identification zones (ADIZs). It is the latest in a series of one-sided military and diplomatic provocations by Beijing towards Tokyo over PM Takaichi Sanae’s Taiwan comments. In response, two American B-52 bombers joined Japanese F-35s and F-15s for their own joint drills. Meanwhile, China has escalated its propaganda efforts to paint the current conflict as a continuation of the Second World War II, with modern-day Japan essentially unchanged since the 1930s. (Ironically, Beijing made these comments to visiting German diplomats.) But given China’s totalitarian regime and massive military buildup during peacetime, which modern-day country actually resembles Imperial Japan? And how should Tokyo counter these growing threats? In this episode, we discuss the China-Russia and Japan-US exercises, Beijing’s WWII propaganda and Japan’s relations with its allies.

China’s trade surplus just blew past one trillion dollars — but the real story isn’t what you’ve been told. Everyone’s arguing about subsidies and the RMB, yet those are just the surface. The real reason China dominates global exports is much darker: low wages, squeezed workers, weak domestic spending, and a system designed to drain money from the world while keeping its own people poor. In this episode, I break down how Beijing pulls it off, why the RMB debate is a distraction, and what this means for the U.S., Europe, and global markets. This is the truth behind China’s trillion-dollar trap.

In the shadow of purges and silenced voices, China’s economy stalls far from the Hu-Wen era’s boom (2002-2012’s pragmatic growth under Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao). Xi Jinping’s Mao-esque aura grows, fueling fears of Cultural Revolution 2.0. Mao’s 1955 left-leaning frenzy—rushing socialism, birthing the Great Famine—eroded his power, sparking CR as a political reset over economic ruin.Today, Xi’s radical optimism revives that tide: wolf-warrior diplomacy, common prosperity, “East rising, West declining” chants, chip and EV overhauls. Zero-COVID was CR 1.5; now, Taiwan hype signals politics eclipsing faltering GDP. The CCP’s curse? Leftist disasters or rightist corruption—no middle path.As contradictions brew, Xi may amp political fervor to mask woes. But wired Chinese won’t swallow stolen years again. Time to resist—or lose more.
