US President Donald Trump presented Chinese President Xi Jinping with a statue of a bald eagle – a national symbol representing American freedom, strength and independence – during a state dinner at the White House on Thursday evening. Chinese President Xi Jinping referred to the story of an American teacher who donated money to help fight desertification in China as an example of friendship between China and the US. Speaking at a state dinner hosted at the White House by US President Donald Trump, Xi spoke of Ronald Sakolsky, who in 1999 gave US$5,000 to farmer Yin Yuzhen to plant trees in the Mu Us Desert in Inner Mongolia. Yin used the money to buy over 50,000 saplings, which in the decades since have grown into a forest. Sakolsky recently visited Yin in China to see what became of his donation. Xi cited this as a “shining example” of the friendly exchanges between Chinese and American people that he urged both sides to nurture. China and the US have the “capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good” and make sure that AI’s development remains under human control, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday during his visit to Washington. Xi also said that he and Trump respect each other, maintain regular communication, and support cooperation in foreign affairs, trade, finance and law enforcement. China’s door was open and it welcomed US firms to invest there, Xi said. An autonomous OpenAI programme infiltrated an Australian government health website in June in an “unacceptable” breach, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday. The artificial intelligence (AI) agent accessed public and non-public files of the health statistics service. OpenAI did not raise the alarm with the Australian government until September, when it sent an email outlining the incident to a generic email address.
