Last year’s opening of Shein’s first-ever permanent physical store sparked protests in Paris. Critics accuse the ultra-fast fashion retailer of violating sustainability norms and French labour standards, saying its presence inside the BHV Marais warehouse cheapened the historic French retail landmark. The backlash quickly escalated into political scrutiny and Shein was fined for “deceptive commercial practices.” In June, BHV ended its partnership with Shein and the new management ordered the shop closed by Christmas. The controversy came ahead of the launch of the company’s initial public offering, with trading to start on September 1.
