China Deploys Largest Fleet of Ships in Decades to Intimidate Taiwan | Firstpost AmericaChina has deployed its largest naval fleet in regional waters in decades, prompting Taiwan to declare its highest level of alert. According to Taiwan, Beijing’s maritime drills involve around 60 warships and 30 coast guard vessels. China has also heightened its military aircraft activity around the self-governed island, with 100 sorties detected in the last two days. Meanwhile, China has yet to comment on the military drills. Beijing’s latest war games were expected by Taiwan, whose President Lai Ching-te made unofficial visits to Hawaii and Guam earlier this month. Taiwan has raised its alert levels in response to China’s largest-ever military exercises near its waters. With nearly 90 Chinese naval and coast guard ships deployed, Beijing’s show of force targets the island chain that spans Japan to Borneo. Taiwan condemned the drills, describing them as a threat to regional stability, and activated combat readiness. The tensions escalated following Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s Pacific tour, which included stops in Guam and Hawaii—moves China views as provocative. Despite mounting pressure, Taiwan reaffirmed its sovereignty, rejecting Beijing’s claims and asserting that only the Taiwanese people can determine their future.#china #taiwan #xijinping #tnworld #timesnowworld #worldnews #internationalnews #timesnews #newsworld

For a while now, the Chinese government has taken countermeasures. On October 31, China’s two major aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, conducted their first-ever joint training exercises in the South China Sea. Chinese state media called them “the strongest surface fleet in Asia.” Foreign media pointed out that this was likely a display of military strength, aimed at containing the Philippines and countering U.S. and Japanese military presence in the Asia-Pacific. Taiwan’s military experts noted that, despite these advances, China’s aircraft carriers still can’t match the capabilities of the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike groups, due to limitations in aircraft capacity, takeoff methods, and the lack of overseas supply bases.

According to the United Nations, China’s population officially peaked in 2021, and as a result of its rapidly falling fertility rates, the population of the entire world is peaking sooner than expected in 2084. With roughly 300 million Chinese retiring over the next 10 years – close to the entire U.S. population – what does this aging society mean for Beijing’s economic and military ambitions? Could the demographic trends show Beijing that its window of opportunity for military might is closing, meaning Xi Jinping is running out of time for a possible Taiwan contingency?
