Three killed in Philippines school shooting

A teenage boy opened fire on his classmates at a school in Banga, a town in the southern Philippine province of South Cotabato, on Friday. He then took his own life. Two others were killed in the attack, and eight were injured. Authorities are investigating the shooter’s connection to an online group, according to the governor.

Hyrox athlete apologises for Beijing soiling incident

Hyrox competitor Joanna Wietrzyk apologised on social media on Thursday after being dogged by controversy following her win at the solo women’s event in Beijing on Saturday. Wietrzyk soiled herself mid-race but carried on competing, contaminating equipment and track surfaces. In her statement, she said she regrets not pulling out of the competition and that she will forfeit the points she earned.

Japan’s ‘Suica penguin’ to be replaced in public vote

The beloved penguin mascot of Tokyo’s Suica transport smart card is set to be replaced when it retires early next year. Regarded by many as the most popular mascot in the country and beyond, the Suica penguin will be replaced by a new character. The new mascot will be selected from three contenders by public vote, set to conclude on September 23.

Ex-Malaysian PM Najib given ‘conditional’ pardon

Malaysia’s Pardons Board agreed Friday to allow disgraced former prime minister Najib Razak to serve out the remainder of his jail term under house arrest. King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar granted Najib a “conditional pardon”, under which the former leader is required to settle his 50 million ringgit (US$12.3 million) fine before he can be transferred to his home to complete his sentence. Najib’s six-year term is set to end on August 23, 2028.
