Trump has announced that the United States has signed a groundbreaking trade deal with China—one that “starts to open up China.” But the details are being kept under wraps. Why? Because this deal is a bombshell that could expose Xi Jinping’s biggest secret. According to a Chinese insider, the agreement opens China’s markets to American firms, levels the playing field for foreign businesses, and dismantles Beijing’s use of rare earths as political leverage. Xi Jinping is reportedly furious about the deal. So why the secrecy? It was requested by China’s Party Elders—who are now sidelining Xi behind closed doors. Their plan? To formally announce Xi’s downfall in the coming months. When exactly? A Taiwanese media outlet may have just dropped a hint.

In South Korea’s presidential election on June 3, the then-opposition Korean Democratic Party received 49.42 percent of the vote, while the ruling People Power Party (PPP) came second with 41.15 percent. Six months earlier, the PPP’s then-leader, President Yoon Suk Yeol, attempted to declare martial law, for which he was later impeached and removed. Now under new leadership, the PPP is finding its feet as the main opposition party in a closely divided country. How does the new opposition view President Lee Jae-myung? What do election results mean for Seoul’s relationship with Taipei? And how would Lee respond to a crisis in the Taiwan Strait? In this special episode from South Korea, TaiwanTalks speaks to a member of the PPP about the election results, Yoon’s failed martial law bid, and the consequences for South Korea’s foreign policy. A day after Israel hit Iran on June 13, several news outlets, including The Telegraph, reported mysterious cargo planes leaving China on three consecutive days flying westward across northern China before crossing into Kazakhstan, and then south through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, before dropping off of radar tracking systems in western Iran. The newspaper said, “Aviation experts have noted that the type of plane used, Boeing 747 freighters, are commonly used for transporting military equipment and weapons, and hired to fly government contract orders.” However, others throw doubt on this hypothesis, saying tracking is often cut off before reaching the plane’s destination, in this case marked as Luxembourg. The funeral of Chinese General Xu Qiliang not only laid to rest a vice chairman of the country’s Central Military Command (CMC) who helped consolidate Xi Jinping’s power over the military, it also signaled that another CMC vice chairman had been purged. Among the Politburo member wreaths on display at the ceremony, He Weidong’s was conspicuously absent, nor did He attend in person. He Weidong oversaw China’s military operations around Taiwan as head of the People Liberation Army’s (PLA’s) Eastern Command, and orchestrated the large-scale drills following former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit. He has not been seen in public since the National People’s Congress on March 11. While he is one of more than 70 PLA generals purged since Xi took power, his position as vice chairman marks the most senior purging of a CMC member since China’s Cultural Revolution. Is Xi Jinping simply strengthening the military’s combat readiness, or are there other motives at play? Could the latest purges of those closest to and fast-tracked by Xi suggest the erosion of his power in a factional war, as some CCP scholars say?

China sharply increased military activity near Taiwan this week. Beijing sent dozens of warplanes across the median line of the Taiwan Strait just days after a British warship passed through the sensitive waterway. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported Friday, June 20, 50 Chinese military aircraft operating around the island, with 46 crossing the median line that separates Chinese and Taiwanese airspace.

Taiwan has signed a partnership deal with US and Germany-based Auterion for drone software that has been tested on the battlefield in Ukraine. The technology was expected to be used to strengthen the self-ruled island’s defences. According to information released about the deal signed on June 17, 2025, the Auterion software has been used in Ukrainian drones operating combat missions against Russian forces. The agreement could eventually lead to the technology being used in millions of drones deployed by Taiwan. The island is actively engaging both local and international defence innovators to showcase uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) technologies with potential military applications. As part of Taiwan’s efforts, 12 companies – including seven from Taiwan and the others based in the US – are taking part in a two-day USV demonstration at Suao port in Taiwan’s northeastern Yilan county. The government-backed National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, which organised the event, said data collected would be used to develop a standardised control system and modular platforms adaptable to missions, including patrol, search and rescue, environmental monitoring and logistics.

TSMC: The Company That Rules the Global Microchip Market | Chip War | FD FinanceWatch ‘Haier: From small Chinese Fridge Maker to Global Industry Giant’ here: • Haier: From small Chinese Fridge Maker to … A new world order is taking shape before our eyes. The Covid-19 pandemic showed the extent to which great powers are dependent on strategic products. The persistent shortage of semiconductors, essential to our daily lives, is reshaping geopolitical relations, fuelling inflation and increasing tensions between America and China. It is estimated that 10 million cars worldwide were not produced in 2021 because manufacturers did not have enough semiconductors. From the computer to the toaster via our tablets and our refrigerators, microprocessors or semiconductors equip all our daily devices. They are of national strategic importance powering all advanced military and civilian technologies. Yet while demand for the quantity and quality of semiconductors has been growing, the amount of places they are produced has been shrinking. Only a few countries have the specialised knowledge and ability to produce cutting-edge chips with 63% of all chips produced in Taiwan. That one island, which is already on the frontline of a superpower struggle between the US and China, dominates production means that the world’s economies are dependent on the stability of Taiwan. So what can be done to secure microprocessors? And how is the battle for semiconductors already affecting our daily lives?

This is a secretive military base in the middle of the Indian Ocean, on an island called Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Archipelago, at the junction between South Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa. On May 22, the U.K. signed an agreement to return sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, with the exception of Diego Garcia. The island, which exclusively houses the joint U.S. and U.K. base, will remain in British control under a 99-year lease. Critics argue the move could expose the base and islands to Chinese influence, given Mauritius’s friendly relations with Beijing.
