Renowned China scholar Orville Schell is vice president of the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations. He maintains that U.S.-China “engagement is not dying, but is already dead.” Schell says the reason is Xi Jinping’s increasingly autocratic and inflexible policies. In this episode, Taiwan Talks discusses the personal history and losses that drive Xi, as well as U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s recent visit to Beijing. Schell is the author of 15 books, 10 about China, including “My Old Home,” a work of fiction. He is also a former professor and dean at the University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army claims to have the largest artillery force in the world today. Open source intelligence estimates them to have 9,500 artillery pieces in its arsenal. But exactly how capable is their hardware and how well trained are their soldiers? And how badly will this video ruin my social credit score in Beijing? The United States Defense Intelligence Agency in their 2019 China Military Power Report, mentions that artillery is the key to understanding the entire PLA Ground Force. This is because over one third of their force is based on arty. So it might be a good idea for us to check in and see what they’re up to. Call for fire on the like button then repeat on subscribe if you want to see two defense videos each week. Written by: Chris Cappy and TonyEdited by: Savvy StudiosWhen the PLA was first established in 1927 they had very limited artillery using what was called mountain guns or pack howitzers. They could be taken apart into smaller pieces to be transported over mountain terrain easier. Not much firepower. However, Right After World War 2 ended the CCP straight up issued a directive that all soldiers and citizens had to collect shells that had been left behind by the Japanese army. Hey are you busy on Saturday? No it’s awesome I’m just taking a me day, gonna chill so hard. Not anymore you’re not go pick up artillery shells until I get tired! This grass roots campaign if you want to call it that , collected 700 artillery pieces and 500,000 rounds that had been abandoned. During their 2nd civil war with the Koumintang the CCP captured more artillery giving them an odd hodgepodge of Japanese, German and American hardware. By this point they were very comfortable using other mens cannons.

Following this, the U.S. and Japan would likely deploy their most advanced weapons, knowing that fighting the PLA is no joke and they can’t afford to be careless. Within the first three hours of the conflict, U.S. and Japanese warplanes could destroy China’s coastal airports, air defense missile sites, and early warning aircraft. F-35 stealth fighters would launch anti-radiation missiles to take out China’s long-range air defense systems, such as the S-300, S-400, and HQ-9, and the PLA’s ship-based air defense systems wouldn’t escape either.#chinaobserver

On the morning of August 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, to Beijing. There was nothing special about this meeting, but it attracted special attention from the outside world. This is because Xi Jinping has not appeared in public for three weeks since he met with East Timor President José Ramos-Horta and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on July 29. This has broken his record for the longest period of “invisibility.” During this period, China’s official media did not provide any particular explanation.

According to Chinese news reports, the Shandong Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security, along with nine other departments, recently issued a joint notice. This notice officially announced the comprehensive reform to transition provincial public institutions into enterprises. As enterprises, they will revoke all civil service positions and change them into regular employees. Meaning, workers can be fired, and their pay will change based on performance. Everyone will be cut and asked to sign new contracts, officially becoming staff under enterprise bargaining agreements.#chinaobserver

On the morning of August 17, after burning for an entire afternoon and through the night, the fire on the “Minsk” aircraft carrier was finally extinguished. Once a formidable presence, the carrier now has a scorched bridge, riddled with holes, though the rear remains intact, hinting at its former glory. The “Minsk,” moored for years along the northern shore of the Yangtze River, was set to be transformed into a national defense-themed park and educational base, with plans for a leisure and tourism complex. Local media had recently boasted of a 2 billion yuan investment, aiming to open by National Day.#chinaobserver
