China’s electric vehicle market is struggling with overproduction and difficulty selling cars. In response, Chinese manufacturers are trying to increase exports to address the issue. However, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers on July 10 shows that China exported 86,000 electric vehicles in June, a 13.2% drop from the previous month. This marks the third consecutive month of declining exports since March. This trend indicates growing resistance in Europe, which has significantly raised import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.#chinaobserver

On July 3, someone on social media revealed that Hangzhou East Railway Station, once touted as one of Asia’s largest high-speed rail stations, has experienced platform subsidence just 11 years after its opening. The platform has sunk to the point where there is a 30-centimeter gap between the train and the platform, forcing passengers to “jump down” from the train, risking falls if they’re not careful. Images show a stark contrast in the height difference between the platform and the train compared to 2018.#chinaobserver

Is Beijing escalating South China Sea territorial claims with areas claimed by Vietnam in the same way as with the Philippines, except that Hanoi chooses to keep the incidents off the international radar? At the beginning of July, China appeared to be holding a rare twin carrier exercise in the South China Sea with the Shandong aircraft carrier and at least eight warships, according to satellite imagery. They were also spotted about 50 miles northeast of Woody Island in the Paracels, an archipelago previously held in part by Vietnam until China seized all in a naval battle in 1974. Taiwan also claims the territory. China’s “monster” coast guard ship has several times this year patrolled Vietnam’s oil fields in the Spratlys, most recently in June. And in March, Beijing redrew its coastal baseline in the Gulf of Tonkin between Vietnam and China, a move that breaks with an agreement reached by Hanoi and Beijing in 2000. How is Vietnam handling these moves by China and will it take a stronger stance toward its more powerful neighbor? We also take a look at cooperation between Vietnam and the Philippines and whether the two South China Sea claimants can stand together against Beijing’s increasingly assertive behavior. Our guests: Alexander Huang- Chair, Council on Strategic & Wargaming Studies- Kuomintang (KMT) international affairs director and representative to the U.S.

Can you believe it? China’s most advanced VT4 tank has turned out to be such a disappointment on the international market that even Nigeria was seriously let down. In 2019, Nigeria made a significant purchase of 35 VT4 main battle tanks from China. Sounds impressive, right? These tanks, touted as “3.5 generation” advanced tanks, failed to fire during military exercises, leaving Nigerian generals wide-eyed in disbelief. If it takes half an hour to fire a single shell in real combat, the enemy would have likely turned us into barbecue by then.Nigeria’s military leadership was frustrated with the situation. The expensive “god tank” they bought turned out to be a flop. Within less than two years, numerous issues emerged, forcing Nigeria to seek alternatives, eventually turning to Russia’s T-90 tanks.#chinaobserver

If this were true, China’s stealth bombers should have already been deployed, but they remain unseen. This clearly indicates that China’s stealth coatings are far from effective.During the Sino-Indian border dispute, two J-20 fighter jets, which are claimed to have stealth capabilities, were flying near the China-India border. However, they were easily tracked by India’s Su-30MKI, showing that the stealth coating was hardly effective.#chinaobserver
