China this year saw a record 12.7 million fresh university graduates, who now face an uphill battle securing stable work in an already crowded job market. Since 2020, China’s youth unemployment has been a persistent problem, forcing many young Chinese to seek work in the public sector for “iron rice bowl” jobs. Others are opting for postgraduate study to boost their future prospects or defer entering the workforce. But many have also been relying on gig work to make ends meet.
