Shanghai Turns Poor Overnight! Slump Impossible to Miss—Biggest Noodle Shop Lasts Just 2 Months

In mid-October 2026, Gao Xiaoxing Noodle Shop near People’s Square in Shanghai closed less than two months after opening, drawing attention across the restaurant industry. The restaurant covered about 8,740 square feet (812 square meters) and was designed to operate 24 hours a day. A bowl of beef broth noodles cost just 12 yuan, an attractive price in one of Shanghai’s most expensive shopping districts. But the bargain-priced restaurant failed in under two months. Its owner had spent nearly 3 million yuan (about US$420,000) on renovations and lost the investment. A closure notice now hangs at the entrance. Some 400 chairs remain neatly arranged inside as the property seeks a new tenant.
