Australia’s first mushroom coffin burial took place last Friday. Made from mycelium and hemp fibres, the casket breaks down quickly and allows the body of the deceased to give back to the earth by nourishing the soil while decomposing. Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano erupted continuously for three days, beginning with an initial blast late Friday night. The nation’s meteorological agency reported two significant eruptions on Sunday that sent volcanic ash more than 150km (83 miles) away and across five provinces. Residents in the capital Jakarta were among those finding homes and cars covered in ashfall. Eight airports in the country were forced to suspend operations, stranding more than 170,000 passengers. Chinese authorities announced on Sunday that search teams have retrieved 12 additional bodies, as efforts persist to locate hundreds who remain unaccounted for following the glacial collapse and subsequent massive flash flood that devastated China’s primary border crossing with Nepal. Forty-three people have been confirmed dead and 519 remain missing on the Chinese side 11 days after the disaster. The announcement came as a small contingent of foreign media were allowed to visit the port for the first time since the deadly flash floods.
