Recently, a large-scale protest broke out in Qiongzhong, Hainan Province, China. The public expressed dissatisfaction with a major state-owned enterprise that cut down thousands of betel nut trees belonging to local farmers. The protesters surrounded the enterprise building, removed signs, and overturned several vehicles. A large number of police officers were deployed to maintain order. The police fired warning shots multiple times, and the protest scene became intense and difficult to control. Public opinion quickly spread but was later entirely deleted by authorities.

Over the past 30 years, China’s rapid rise has been driven by an export-oriented foreign investment model. Foreign direct investment, infrastructure investment, state-owned enterprise fixed asset investment, and real estate investment—these four forces once jointly constructed the miracle of China’s economic rise. Today, as these four pillars have almost completely collapsed, China’s economy is facing four ticking time bombs: the economic momentum loss from the sharp reduction in foreign investment, the local government debt risks accumulated from infrastructure investment, excessive subsidies and liabilities in state-owned enterprises’ capacity reduction, and the complete collapse of the real estate investment bubble.

Turns out, the U.S. government didn’t just allow American tech companies to help China’s surveillance state—it encouraged them. From cloud loopholes to direct connections with China’s security agencies, Washington’s fingerprints are all over the CCP’s spy machine.
