China has denied that its ship rammed into the back of Philippine coast guard vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua at Sabina Shoal and claimed that the Philippines is at fault, despite releasing footage showing the incident. When pressed on how the Philippines could have rammed the front of the Chinese vessel from its back, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning replied: “This is the root cause of the current escalatory situation at Xianbin Jiao (Sabina Shoal). The measures China took are aimed at protecting its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”

Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an internal probe into the leak of a classified diplomatic note sent by China regarding oil exploration activities in the South China Sea, following its publication by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The note, sent in February 2024, expressed China’s concerns over Malaysia’s oil and gas exploration near the Luconia Shoals, an area claimed by China under its controversial nine-dash line but situated within Malaysia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Despite China’s objections, Malaysia has reaffirmed its right to conduct exploration in the region under international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressed Malaysia’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty while maintaining diplomatic dialogue with China, highlighting the broader regional tensions over competing claims in the South China Sea. The leak has further complicated Malaysia’s delicate balancing act between defending its maritime rights and preserving its economic ties with China, with the government swiftly initiating an investigation to prevent further breaches. China Fights US Dollar: Exposes Chinese Banks to Losses | Vantage with Palki SharmaChina’s covert strategy to support the yuan using foreign-exchange swaps is putting its banks at risk of billions in losses while creating easy profits for savvy investors. State-run Chinese banks have built over $100 billion in short positions on the dollar to stabilise the currency without draining foreign reserves. However, this move has led to significant losses as the yuan weakened earlier this year. This strategy shields the People’s Bank of China from international scrutiny while state banks bear the risk.
