China is a big country with a lot of buildings, and apparently a lot of ugly buildings at that. There is a competition running in China to name the ugliest buildings for 2021, and this competition has been going on for over a decade. Chinese officials have taken notice though, and are trying to regulate ugly buildings out of existence. Apparently they don’t want China to be known as the land of ugly buildings.

China has been trying to build up its pharma industry to rival that of the US, but as the effectiveness of its vaccines show, that hasn’t happened. With its pharma industry failing, China is falling back on an old cash cow: organ harvesting. Joining us to discuss this is Ethan Gutmann, an investigative journalist and author of “The Slaughter: Mass Killings, Organ Harvesting, and China’s Secret Solution to Its Dissident Problem” and “Losing the New China: A Story of American Commerce, Desire, and Betrayal”.

Ethan Gutmann, an investigative journalist and author of several books about China, made an interesting discovery while interviewing a Uyghur woman from Xinjiang, China. While there, she had been forced to pick toxic peppers, and when asked what she thought the peppers were used for, she said cosmetics. According to Chinese state media, China produces about half of the world’s pigments for cosmetics, and just this year, Xinhua did a piece on the peppers used for cosmetics grown in Xinjiang.
