Niall Ferguson chatted with John late last year about the parallels between the Cuban missile crisis and the growing tensions with Taiwan. Historian Niall Ferguson joins John to discuss the challenges facing Western societies, the geopolitical landscape, and cultural issues. He reflects on the shifting nature of Western academic institutions, which he believes have moved away from intellectual diversity and become dominated by progressive orthodoxies, prompting him to support the creation of a new university in Austin dedicated to open debate and the fearless pursuit of truth.Ferguson also addresses U.S. political dynamics, examining the impact of Donald Trump on American foreign policy and his influence on public discourse regarding China and globalism. He further explores the geopolitical threats posed by the rise of authoritarian states like China and Iran, advocating for a renewed focus on national security, fiscal responsibility, and technological innovation in the West.Niall Ferguson is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. His most recent book is Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe.

The US declaring its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Agreement under the second administration of President Donald Trump marks a significant shift in global health and climate policy. But the moves, which deal a heavy blow to global governance on climate and public health, leave a leadership vacuum that could open opportunities for China. Experts say while Beijing appears poised to lead global climate initiatives, its potential to gain influence in WHO public health governance is limited.

On January 6, a shocking post titled “In 2025, the Rong family will completely relocate to Canada” appeared on the Chinese platform NetEase under the account name “Lu Xiaohu.” Although the post was quickly deleted, the Rong family neither confirmed nor denied the rumor.Mao Zedong, then-leader of the CCP, reportedly remarked, “The Rong family is the largest national capitalist family in China. China has begun 2025 with a near continuous presence of its 165-meter “monster” coast guard ship in the Philippine’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off the Philippine coast of Zambales. A further 60 to 70 nautical miles to the west is Scarborough Shoal, seized by China in 2012, but located within Manila’s EEZ. The West Philippine Coast Guard says Beijing seeks to “normalize” its presence in this area and thereby change the status quo. In this show, South China Sea expert, Liu Fu-kuo, said that Chinese reports show it plans to militarize Scarborough Shoal to enhance the feature’s strategic value, with Beijing waiting for an appropriate time.

“China Eastern Airlines’ domestically-made C919 aircraft had a mechanical issue. I specifically chose flight MU9199 to Guangzhou to experience the C919, but China Eastern told me the C919 had ‘mechanical issues.’ The flight was delayed for over an hour, and they replaced the aircraft with an Airbus A321. What’s the point of paying this price and booking this flight? There were cheaper and earlier flights available. I believe many customers choose this flight to support and experience the C919. This plane is only two years old—how can it have mechanical issues so easily? If they’re going to switch planes, shouldn’t they apologize or compensate customers? With service like this, I probably won’t choose China Eastern again.”Join this channel to get access to perks:
