At the China-CELAC Forum in Beijing, President Xi Jinping urged Latin American and Caribbean nations to join China in defending global peace and multilateralism. Trade surpassed $500bn last year, and Xi announced a $9.2bn credit line plus visa-free access for five countries. China seeks to rival US influence in the region, with Brazil’s President Lula calling China its top trading partner. The forum highlights Beijing’s growing ties through Belt and Road projects and trade deals. However, concerns remain over Chinese overcapacity, with some nations imposing tariffs to protect local industries.

In this video I discuss the latest data and ongoing problems within the Chinese Economy. Chinese businesses are under severe pressure with producer prices falling at their fastest rate for 6 months and having now fallen for 30 consecutive months. The economy is currently in the grip of deflation with domestic prices having fallen in every one of the past 3 months. Added to this the USA represents the largest single export market for China’s exports and those exports are now facing minimum Tariffs of 30%, however that figure could rise depending upon the outcome of the ongoing trade deal negotiations. If the current trading conditions continue the Chinese Economy is at risk of imploding and will not come close to hitting the target GDP growth figure of 5.0% for 2025. Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin met for the 45th time since Xi came to power, as the Chinese leader attended Moscow’s military parade marking the 80th anniversary of World War II victory. But this wasn’t the diplomatic triumph Beijing had hoped for. Xi arrived expecting unity, support, and perhaps even a joint front against the U.S. What he got instead? No alliance. No anti-U.S. pact. While headlines screamed “Friends of Steel,” the reality told a different story—one of diplomatic pageantry, unmet expectations, and a leader who left with less than he came for.

Recently, a steel trader in Tangshan city in China revealed that the average profit for Tangshan steel mills is only around 20 yuan per ton. According to him, this equates to earning just 2 cents per kilogram of steel. This slim profit is almost negligible and could easily lead to losses. In such a cost-profit inversion, the survival pressure on steel companies is immense. Every production decision feels like walking on thin ice, as even a small fluctuation in costs could be detrimental to the company.

A paper published last month in China’s top aviation journal, the peer-reviewed Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica, reveals that the J-36 design team is in the early stages of making a naval variant suitable for use with the PLA Navy’s growing fleet of aircraft carriers. And like with other features like EMALS, the Chinese are copying the American military’s best practices and developing them at a rate far faster than that of the Pentagon’s procurement system. In this case they’re working on a computer system that will help pilots safely land on a moving aircraft carrier, something like the U.S. Navy’s precision landing mode or PLM used by carrier air wing Super Hornet and F-35C pilots.
