Two nuclear-capable Russian Tu-95 bombers conducted a joint patrol with Chinese J-15 fighters and H-6 bombers through Japan and South Korea’s air-defense identification zones (ADIZs). It is the latest in a series of one-sided military and diplomatic provocations by Beijing towards Tokyo over PM Takaichi Sanae’s Taiwan comments. In response, two American B-52 bombers joined Japanese F-35s and F-15s for their own joint drills. Meanwhile, China has escalated its propaganda efforts to paint the current conflict as a continuation of the Second World War II, with modern-day Japan essentially unchanged since the 1930s. (Ironically, Beijing made these comments to visiting German diplomats.) But given China’s totalitarian regime and massive military buildup during peacetime, which modern-day country actually resembles Imperial Japan? And how should Tokyo counter these growing threats?
