China fumed as a British warship transited the international waters of the Taiwan Strait on June 18 for the first time in four years. The U.K. said the passage fully complied with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It comes as Japan is also increasing its transits in line with the U.S.’s freedom of navigation operations through the Taiwan Strait. But how is this linked to a proposed change in Taiwan’s “Cross-Strait Act”, an amendment that civic groups have raised concerns about? Are those fears substantiated and how divided is Taiwan? Is China always the winner if Taiwan is divided, and how can the nation overcome this?
