The Chinese attack submarine currently under development at a shipyard in Wuhan might be designed to target medium-range missile defence systems in the Philippines. It is also capable of carrying hypersonic missiles, enabling Beijing an option of using nuclear warheads if deemed necessary. The US Typhon launchers, stationed in the Philippines since April 2024, can hit targets in mainland China from the northern Philippine island of Luzon.—
