China’s electric vehicle market is struggling with overproduction and difficulty selling cars. In response, Chinese manufacturers are trying to increase exports to address the issue. However, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers on July 10 shows that China exported 86,000 electric vehicles in June, a 13.2% drop from the previous month. This marks the third consecutive month of declining exports since March. On July 3, someone on social media revealed that Hangzhou East Railway Station, once touted as one of Asia’s largest high-speed rail stations, has experienced platform subsidence just 11 years after its opening. The platform has sunk to the point where there is a 30-centimeter gap between the train and the platform, forcing passengers to “jump down” from the train, risking falls if they’re not careful. Is Beijing escalating South China Sea territorial claims with areas claimed by Vietnam in the same way as with the Philippines, except that Hanoi chooses to keep the incidents off the international radar? At the beginning of July, China appeared to be holding a rare twin carrier exercise in the South China Sea with the Shandong aircraft carrier and at least eight warships, according to satellite imagery. They were also spotted about 50 miles northeast of Woody Island in the Paracels, an archipelago previously held in part by Vietnam until China seized all in a naval battle in 1974. Taiwan also claims the territory. China’s “monster” coast guard ship has several times this year patrolled Vietnam’s oil fields in the Spratlys, most recently in June. And in March, Beijing redrew its coastal baseline in the Gulf of Tonkin between Vietnam and China, a move that breaks with an agreement reached by Hanoi and Beijing in 2000. How is Vietnam handling these moves by China and will it take a stronger stance toward its more powerful neighbor? We also take a look at cooperation between Vietnam and the Philippines and whether the two South China Sea claimants can stand together against Beijing’s increasingly assertive behavior. Remember those huge quarantine facilities China built? Well, they no longer need them and have started to tear them down. The material used to build them is being broken down and sold for scrap. This is such a waste and terrible for the environment. China is definitely not the leader in green initiatives!

On June 20, China’s Military Commission issued a document titled “Measures on Insisting on Struggling Hardly and Building the Army Diligently and Thriftily to Improve the Quality and Efficiency of Army Construction.” It mentions that “the mindset of living on a tight budget is to be maintained, and careful budgeting is to be done” and that the military needs to improve “the effectiveness of the military system and the efficiency of making use of national defense resources.” What does this mean?
