After OpenAI released ChatGPT to the world last November, the race was on in China to create something a Chinese version of it. Several Chinese companies began working on their own models, but it was Baidu’s ERNIE bot that beat all the others to the finish line (or at least kind of). In this episode of China Uncensored, we look at why China was so slow to develop its own AI chatbot, what responses a socialist ChatGPT gives on sensitive topics, and China’s proposed regulations for generative AI.
