Chinese President Xi Jingping has ended his tour of Southeast Asia, having visiting Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The visits were aimed at shoring up support as China deals with US President Donald Trump’s trade war. Beijing has responded to crushing US tariffs with levies of its own on US goods. With Xi refusing to back down, trade tensions remain high. China has signalled it’s ready for the long game, taking steps to support its own economy and cutting off vital minerals to the US. Taiwan’s interior ministry has rolled out a new website for religious groups to register their plans for travel in China so the government can offer assistance should things go awry. The move comes after reports of Taiwanese visitors being detained and questioned by Chinese authorities.

The trade war is escalating, and the US tariffs on China have now reached a staggering 245% on some products. China and the rest of the world have relied on American consumers to stay afloat. The trade imbalances between the United States and other countries are staggering. ASEAN countries have become key transit hubs for Chinese goods to be sold to the United States, with Vietnam leading the pack. Despite its relatively small GDP, Vietnam’s trade surplus with the United States is nearly half the size of China’s. Meanwhile, the U.S. has helped Canada, Mexico, and the EU achieve more balanced trade. Without the United States, the rest of the world would all run trade deficits with China. Jordan Schachtel, publisher of The Dossier, has called for a complete decoupling of the United States from China, arguing that the current relationship is “completely unacceptable.”Speaking to Sky News host James Morrow, Mr Schachtel discussed his recent piece titled “Decoupling from China is Worth the Price.” “The Chinese government is extremely authoritarian. They continually steal an estimated half a trillion dollars’ worth of intellectual property, including research and development, super-classified weapons systems, our fighter jets. And we have no recourse for it,” he said. “And the Chinese have been abusing the trade relationship of the United States for decades now. “So I believe that the time has come to fully decouple.”
