The Chinese Communist regime operates within a totalitarian framework built on absolute control. Since the start of China’s economic reforms, the CCP has found itself in a paradox. On one hand, it had to loosen control over the private sector to stimulate economic growth. On the other, it could not afford to fully relinquish control, fearing that private ownership and property rights would politically empower citizens and threaten the Party’s authority. The rise of the digital economy has only deepened Xi Jinping’s anxieties, intensifying the CCP’s perpetual struggle to balance economic growth with authoritarian control. It’s proven to be mission impossible.
