The outdated practice of paying a “bride price” in China is once again under scrutiny. A Chinese doctoral student studying in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, reportedly asked her Dutch boyfriend for 88,000 euros as a bride price after discovering she was pregnant in March 2024. Instead of agreeing to marry her, the boyfriend disappeared.
