Lowy Institute International Security Program Director Sam Roggeveen says it would be “disastrous” for Australia if China establishes a military presence in the Pacific.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a new security deal with the Solomon Islands.“One bit of connective tissue here is that the ultimate fear is that China sets up agreements with one or more Pacific Islands countries to actually establish a Chinese military presence in the Pacific,” Mr Roggeveen told Sky News Australia.“That would be disastrous for Australia, so we’re aiming to prevent that.”
