Manila says China is stepping up pressure on the Philippines to relinquish its rights in the South China Sea. It follows Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signing into law two maritime acts that outline the waters and territory that fall within Manila’s jurisdiction. In response, Beijing swiftly released a Chinese map establishing baselines for its sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal, which it took in 2012 despite the shoal’s situation within Manila’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
