Renowned China scholar Orville Schell is vice president of the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations. He maintains that U.S.-China “engagement is not dying, but is already dead.” Schell says the reason is Xi Jinping’s increasingly autocratic and inflexible policies. In this episode, Taiwan Talks discusses the personal history and losses that drive Xi, as well as U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s recent visit to Beijing. Schell is the author of 15 books, 10 about China, including “My Old Home,” a work of fiction. He is also a former professor and dean at the University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism.
